A boat is defined as a watercraft of any size designed to float or plane, or to provide passage across water. Boats such as the whaleboat were designed to be operated from a ship in an offshore environment. In naval terms, a boat is a vessel small enough to be carried aboard another vessel (a ship).
The
American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) was created in 1954 as a non-profit organization to develop safety standards for the design, construction, equipage, repair and maintenance of boats. As a consequence of the continuing success of this mission, ABYC has evolved into a viable alternative to mandatory government regulation of the marine industry. The mission of ABYC is to improve boating safety and reduce the number of injuries and fatalities.
