Elementary education begins with kindergarten around age five and most states require students to stay in school until twelfth grade, at age 17 or 18. Education in the United States is mainly provided by the public sector, with control and funding coming from local, state, and federal levels. Public education is universally available. School curricula, funding, teaching, employment, and other policies are set by locally elected school boards with jurisdiction over their districts, and other directives from state legislatures.  School districts are usually separate from other local jurisdictions, with independent officials and budgets.
