contributed by Ronna Fleischman The U.S. President George Washington might be considered the first American trendsetter when it came to hairstyles.  He went against the norm of his era by not wearing a wig. Instead, he pulled his hair back and powdered it, elaborating it with extra-long sideburns. Since then, Americans have embraced the styling of hair as another example of individual expression. Hairstyles during the 1800’s were focused largely on soft up-do’s and romantic curls and ringlets.  Nearly all women had long hair, often long enough to sit on, but it was hardly ever worn loose. Read More
