In America, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the federal agency responsible for overseeing the safety and security of the nation’s food supply and protecting the public health. The FDA and subordinate agencies ensure the safety of food, food additives and dietary supplements by setting science-based standards for preventing foodborne illness and ensuring compliance with these standards. They monitor the safety of animal feed and the effectiveness of animal drugs, including the safety of drug residues in human food derived from animals. They protect the food and feed supply from intentional contamination.
