contributed by Ronna Fleischman Men in America wore moccasins until 1629 when a shoemaker of London, Thomas Beard, brought a kit of tools to Massachusetts and became the first recorded shoemaker in the colonies. John Adams Dagyr created the first shoe factory in America in the early 18th century. And in 1883, Jan Matzlenger created a machine that could produce 700 shoes a day. He received a patent for this technology in 1883. And so began America’s love affair with shoes.  Throughout its history, shoe trends have helped to shape as well as symbolize American culture.
