Two people who believe they have found a partner to share their life with exchange vows in either a religious or civil ceremony.  Marriages are not “arranged” in order to strengthen family business or influence. Old wedding tradition required that a prospective groom ask the bride’s father for his daughter’s hand in marriage.  While a young man and woman hope that both sets of parents will give their blessing to the union, today it is typical that a blessing will be asked out of courtesy but it is not required nor always sought.
