contributed by Ronna Fleischman China began to build nuclear power in 1970 and in 2005, the industry moved into a rapid development phase. Mainland China has 17 nuclear power reactors currently in operation and 28 under construction.  The main nuclear operators are China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) and China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGNPC).  Additional reactors are being planned, including some of the worlds most advanced, to give a five- or six-fold increase in nuclear capacity by 2020. China has become largely self-sufficient in reactor design and construction, as well as other aspects of the fuel cycle.  Technology has been drawn from France, Canada, Russia, and most recently from the USA. Read More
